Sarah Boline
My artistic practice is inspired by my subconscious, the female experience, medieval/Victorian themes, mysticism, fantasy, and storytelling. I love showcasing the past in my work and enjoy guiding the viewer through a different world with small details, often with a melancholy aesthetic. The preferred colors in my work are black and white because of their timelessness and reference to the past; for example, black and white films and Victorian illustrations.
My creative process starts with journal writing. I write down images that come to mind, themes, and stories. I also enjoy taking walks before I write - finding formations in nature that resemble creatures or objects. In addition, books often inspire me, some of which include medieval ornamental work, medieval manuscripts, and children's fairytale book illustrations. Artists who inspire me are Brian Froud, Edward Gorey, Gustav Dore, Hieronymus Bosch, and Aubrey Beardsley.
Using pen and ink is my favorite medium. I make thumbnails and then go on to a sketch that maps the light and dark elements. I'll first draw a light sketch with pencil and then do simple linework with a pen. I normally tend to focus on one aspect of the drawing or work my way from the top left to the right. My favorite pen and ink methods are cross hatching and pointillism. Small details make my heart sing and those normally are incorporated near the end of the piece. I hope that through my work people can escape to a different era and time, whether that be to the past or present, to nature, childhood, or to an imaginary world. My work is a reflection and a journal of my mental, spiritual beliefs, and the things that I love. When viewing my work, I hope that people can reflect on their own experiences, just as I incorporate my own subconscious into them. My work is a journey and I wish that viewers find some solace, enlightenment, or just have fun exploring it.
