History of Lancaster Art Vault
The Lancaster Art Vault (LAV), established in December 2023, opened its doors to the public in May 2024 at 100 North Queen Street, Lancaster. Formerly a bank building, the Lancaster Art Vault team is preserving the history of this downtown landmark while transforming it into an inspiring, creative, and welcoming art destination.
The first floor of the building, which previously housed teller windows and administrative offices, has been converted into open gallery spaces and studios. With over 15,000 square feet, high ceilings, and abundant natural light, the transformation from bank to gallery has been remarkable. Where bank transactions and deposits took place since the early 1970s, now 10-foot gallery walls and professional lighting highlight artwork from both local and national artists. The administrative and training rooms lining the perimeter have been transformed into studios with incredible natural light, allowing artists to create and display their work in their own mini galleries.
The first-floor banking training room has been renamed the "WithDRAWal Room," a membership-based co-working space for artists to create and collaborate. The former ATM and Deposit room, with direct access to Binns Park and Queen Street, is being transformed into a coffee and lunch café for visitors and the community.
The basement of 100 North Queen Street, which still houses three large vaults from its banking days, now features a large classroom for workshops and classes, a photography room for member artists to photograph their work, and additional flexible space to be built out as needed.
Lancaster Art Vault has taken a central downtown landmark and turned it into a destination for First Fridays, Art Walk, and downtown celebrations. Visitors are welcome to stroll through our galleries, and guest artists are invited to exhibit their work alongside our resident artists.
